1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Coraxo is an avantgarde death metal band from Finland, founded in 2013.
2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?
We mix multiple genres in our music, melodic death metal (Dark Tranquillity), black metal (Dissection, Dawn), ambient electronic music (Tangerine Dream), movie soundtracks, jazz and progressive rock (Pink Floyd).
3.Your lyrics cover science fiction and horror, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those topics?
Science fiction has always been a very good medium to write about difficult issues in a fictional setting. Our lyrics vary in theme in such topics as religious fundamentalism,terrorism, propaganda, fascism, oppression, all situated in the post-apocalyptic scifi environment of Coraxo.
The story is about how an ancient race of beings that have found a way using technology to exist outside time and space, only nanomachines housing their consciousness in the material realm, arrive on Earth and start brainwashing people. The aliens believe converting humanity into the same way they are is the key to their goal of eventually getting ridof the nanomachines altogether and leaving the material universe completely. Those that don't want to convert will be killed. The lyrics are separate short stories in that universe, in the vein of cold war era scifi with the whole "anyone could be one of them" paranoia.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Coraxo'?
Coraxo is the enochian word for a group of angels that govern over "divine wrath and judgement".
We thought it would fit very well for our own story where a god-like alien entity in the vein of HP Lovecraft rains fire from the sky.
5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Old school sweat, smiles and rock n'roll. Maybe in the future we'll incorporate more stage props like 12 feet tall inflatable aliens etc. but for now we go with the regular sweaty rock show.
6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
We'll be playing a short mini tour in Germany in Feb, some gigs in Finland in march and an 8-day european tour in August.
7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?
A lot of people seem to like it, it's a new kind of sound. We're pretty active on twitter so follow us there if you want to chat.
8.Are any of the band members also involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?
Our drummer plays in another band called Sinfully Yours. I don't have any other projects at the moment.
9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
We're currently recording a follow-up for Neptune, working title "Sol", which will be much more melodic and upbeat than Neptune. Neptune is quite chaotic and dissonant and a lot of the songs were composed using the 12-tone technique to increase that alien and odd atmosphere, so by now going the traditional melody route, it's very much the opposite direction.We'll have most of the keyboard parts recorded instead of programmed as well to get a bit more organic feel to the next album.
10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
All kinds of styles, I enjoy bands that don't have a box that they can be put into. Metal bands like Hypocrisy, Enslaved, Devin Townsend Project, Deathspell Omega, Alcest, Gojira.
Other genres Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Tycho, Node, Tangerine Dream, Portishead, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Pink Floyd, list goes on. Just found new interestesting bands are Zombi and Perturbator.
11.What are some of your non musical interests?
I run a mixing/mastering service called Raivio Sound. To be honest I don't really have any time for non musical interests right now, the band and the studio take more time than I have to spare!
