Never To Arise Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
Michael Kilborn: We’re a two man death metal band based out of Pinellas County Florida.  Gordon and I have been friends for 12 years.
We met through a mutual friend who we have both played in bands with.

Gordon Denhart: Never To Arise actually started back in late 2005 as a home studio project. It was originally a one man operation at the start,
then I asked Michael to play bass and help mix it. It evolved into a proper 2 man band when I asked him to contribute a guitar solo,
which turned out so well that he ended up doing half the solos on the CD. Thanks to the internet,we were able to get the demo tracks out there
and slowly but surely we are at the point where our debut CD is about to be released on badGod Music.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
Gordon: I would say a more classic style of death metal with other elements thrown into the mix.
Michael:Yes,death metal with hints of classic thrash and speed

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Michael: I’ll let Gordon describe since he is the principal lyricist
Gordon: Basically it pretty much revolves around a fictional serial killer...a med school dropout who hates women.
Only this killer doesn't have a single M.O.,he likes to get a bit creative at times.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Michael: Being a death metal band, the subject matter would obviously be about death.  Therefore, the victims in our songs are doomed never to arise
Gordon:  No zombie stories for us.I guess you could say we are a very anti-zombie band    hahaha

5. Has the band been able to play it live yet, if so what are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
Gordon: We have yet to play live, and to be honest it is not a great concern at this time.
Michael: We are currently a studio band and plan on staying one in the future unless circumstances necessitate otherwise

6. Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up or do you choose to remain a duo?
Michael: We would prefer remaining a duo unless sometimes in the future, we would choose to tour
Gordon: I prefer just the two of us......maybe down the road if this thing works out well I could possibly see adding a drummer.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of brutal death metal?
Michael: Overwhelmingly positive
Gordon: Yes it really has been.I am sure there are certain people out there who may think we aren't quite brutal enough or whatever,
but we don't hear any insults.

8. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this a full time line-up?
Gordon: Well,we each have other projects planned, but Never To Arise is a band that is not going away.
Michael: I am currently in another band that plays out live and am in the works of a couple of other original projects.
Gordon: Yeah, Michael is a very busy guy.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
Michael: We will continue in a similar vein from the first album.
Gordon: The songs for a second CD have already been written, and it's not a drastic change.
If anything, overall the songs will be shorter with more riffs per song. And Michael is basically gonna take over as the main lead guitaist.
Lyrically, I don't plan on "maturing" or anything. They call it "Death Metal" for a reason..

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Gordon: As far as influences, I don't count anything out. From classic death metal to bands like Coroner and Voivod in their technical period.
Even some of the really brutal stuff from the last 10 years, there can be something to be learned from.
I listen to a lot of different styles of metal, my playlist changes on a daily basis.Plus there are a lot of great underground death/thrash bands
working on making a name for themselves just like we are that I enjoy listening to: Desoulment,Iniquitous,Mass Murder Frenzy,Awoken By Death...just to name a few.

Michael: My early guitar influences are John McLaughlin, Michael Schenker and Eddie Van Halen.   Current guitarists I’m listening to are Chris Broderick and Michael Romeo.  The bands I’ve been listening to have been Opeth, Symphony X and Gorguts

11.Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Gordon: Not a whole lot.I do spend a lot of time playing the online game Mafia Wars though. And I am a big football and hockey fan.
Michael: I am a fan of all four of the major American sports (baseball, football, basketball and hockey) and especially enjoy attending American football and hockey games.  During American football season, I enjoy spending Sunday afternoons with my friends including Gordon watching them on television.   I also enjoy a good Imperial Stout every now and then.
Gordon: Hahaha! More now than then! He likes his Jager too

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Gordon: Well first off, thanks for talking with us! For a small band like us this really helps get the word out. And thanks to you in general for supporting
the scene...we are all in this together. You don't find that kind of bond or kinship with other forms of music. That's what makes Metal so special.
People are truly passionate about it.
Michael: We definitely thank you for the opportunity of participating in this interview, and I hope those who have a chance to hear us enjoy our music
